New York, October 18, 2024 – Catholics for Kamala applauds Vice President Kamala Harris for her heedful and witty remarks at the Al Smith Dinner last night, which she joined remotely from Wisconsin. “It is an important tradition that I’m so proud to be a part of,” Harris said. “The Al Smith Dinner provides a rare opportunity to come together to support the tremendous charitable work of the Catholic Church.
Harris’s gracious remarks stood in contrast to Donald Trump’s performance.
Dr. Patrick Whelan, co-author of The Catholic Case for Kamala with Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, said, “Mr. Trump wore a tuxedo, but once again resorted to gutter insults and profanity at an event that historically pays elegant tribute to our shared Catholic values of unity and care for the neediest in society. Trump’s inability to make fun of himself proved again that guilt is the tribute that vice pays to virtue.”
Professor Miguel Diaz, former Vatican ambassador and the John Courtney Murray Chair in Public Service at Loyola University in Chicago, added: “Words matter. Telling the truth matters. In her remarks, Vice President Harris demonstrated a vision aligned with Jesus’ teachings to love God and our neighbors, setting herself apart as the candidate embodying these values in the upcoming election.”
She concluded by citing with conviction the gospel of St Luke: “Faith has the power to shine a light on those living in darkness and guide our feet in the path of peace.
